The Asus router needs to be connected via cable provided to your ISP modem.

When turned on it creates a new wifi network and has 4 ports.

To be protected any device by VPN all you need to do is connect it to the Asus router wifi or ports.

After that, in a nutshell, everything your device wants to load will now be fetched by the Asus from the VPN server, and not your ISP in an encrypted form and give you back your online privacy on all your devices.

Broadband and VPN services

The Asus works with all UK ISPs, it's as easy as connecting the asus to the ISP modem and you're done.

Virgin Media broadband customers you need to change some firewall settings first to allow VPN to connect, the steps are included in my documentation.

VPN router options and choosing the right one.

The important factors are router CPU speed, WIFI AC capacity and coverage.

What makes VPN run faster is not the wifi speed or superfast broadband, it's the CPU of the router.

VPN is a mathematically intensive process and the burden of that task is on the CPU. A slow CPU will give you slow internet.

Choosing the right router for you

The RT-AC51U with a 580Mhz CPU is the most economical and capable with a decent 30Mbs max VPN capacity, a HD stream needs 5Mbs, if you want to double that performance you should consider the RT-AC58U which is quad core and can hit 50Mbs.

These speeds tests are using PPTP protocol.

OpenVPN is more intensive and will reduce the speed to 7Mbs on the RTAC51U and about 30Mbs on all the RT-AC58U.

This is why I configure all my routers using PPTP.
